XML quiz components is a concept we developed to increase development efficiency and improve content flexibility. The content expert only needs to write an XML quiz document and upload it into the content management system in order to insert quizzes into the flash based LMS (the interface you are using right now, which has been used for all but one of the Water Center’s training programs). This works well for the web because the Data-Driven Component only needs to be loaded once into the interface and then it can transform the XML into graphical, interactive, multiple choice quizzes. There are several different formats for these quiz questions: game based quizzing, True/False, Click All That Apply, and Matching. Unlike many LMS flash quizzes these are not dependant on the web or a database so they can be loaded anywhere. This was critical because our development model is single source tri-deployment (CD/DVD-ROM, Publication, and Web). We try to use <font color="#BBFFBB"><a href="asfunction:glossaryClicked,1">single source editing </a></font>whenever text shows up in multiple formats. When a content expert finds a problem in a quiz he or she only has to change the XML document using our content management system and then the publication and the interactive version are updated at the same time. This eliminates any possibilities for inconsistencies between formats and opens the way for easy translation of Water Center training programs. (other examples are coming soon)
